Anniversary and a couple Birthdays.

WHERE ARE WE? La Penita RV Park, La Penita, Nayarit, Mexico
NEXT DESTINATION? We are here for a while

Well not much has happened for me in the last few days.  I'm just going to put 3 days into 1.  I failed to mention that Sue had the same cold as me last week and has since recovered.  So she is good to do things now which lets me just hang out in bed feeling sorry for myself.  She went out for supper with some of our friends to celebrate their Anniversary at Mario's which is right near the park.  I might mention that it was Harold's birthday that day also and Sues was the next day so they covered a lot of bases.  Happy Birthday Harold and Sue!!

The next two days were down days as well.  We have been talking about whether these illnesses we have had are because we are in Mexico.  I certainly had Montezuma's revenge when we first got here, and that is normal for a gringo with a soft stomach.  Everything is so spicy that it reeks havoc with our digestive system.  The other illnesses I think are just normal flue thingies.  Certainly with the warm weather and some less than desirable sanitation situations, illness is transmitted more readily.  Now that is not to say the Mexican people are unsanitary people.  They are exactly opposite.  Inside their houses and businesses are immaculately clean.   But when you walk down the street and have to dodge dog poop and grey water running down the street, and the dogs have mange and distemper and fleas, and when you go to the bathroom and the garbage can is full of poopy toilet paper, that can't be really that good for a person.  No toilet paper is allowed in Mexican toilets because most of their sewer systems are 3 pipes which plug easily.  But that is the normal for them so they don't see it as a problem.  Still a small price to pay for living in Paradise.

Sue and I didn't get our flue shots this year because they were late getting them out.  I guess we could have got them here in Mexico, but I don't think that would have helped anyway, because the entire park has been subjected to the illness and lots of them had flue shots.  Don't get me wrong, I believe in doing what I can to minimize our risk and with my heart condition it is certainly recommended for me, but hey, lets be realistic also.  I think maybe the heat makes it harder to bounce back from illnesses down here.  The Mexicans are a tough people and their bodies are immune to a lot more stuff because they are not protected from it like we are.   That is why I always say to my kids, let the Grand kids play in the dirt.  They will be better off later.  And the fact that there is nothing pushing you to recover because you can make every day as busy or relaxed as you want it.  I have read 2 books in the last week and that is more than I normally read in a whole winter!  I think I am almost back to normal and hopefully no more bugs are lurking!!

We have been noticing a lot of snowbirds packing up and getting ready for the trek back north.  Most are just repositioning to the southern US where the temps are a little bit more moderate but warming up now.  We are going to hang around to see what March weather is like here just so we can make decisions for next year how long we want to be here.   We certainly know we won't be back to La Penita until late November so we will need to spend some time in the southern states before continuing to here.

In case anybody is considering coming to this part of Mexico next year, it is time to start planning.  Lots of snowbird parks are booked ahead by deposit, but generally you can get a spot if you commit in mid summer.  You can contact us at our e-mail or come see us at CJ's when we get home if you want any information on places to stay or getting down here or paperwork you may need.  We don't know everything but can maybe point you in the right direction.  If you are travelling when we go, we would be happy to have you tag along.   We will hopefully get a group together for travelling from the Brownsville area next year and have someone in the group who knows the route well.

Ok no more boring stuff.  I got to go and find some interesting things to take pictures of and write about for the next few days.  Hope you had a great couple days.

  2. Happy Birthday Harold and Sue. Happy Anniversary to your friends. Looks like a nice time was had by all that attended.
Sickness is a fact of life, and being in close proximity in the park helps to spread the germs and therefore a lot folks get ill. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with cleanliness, it has to do with air borne germs. You folks don't normally park in a campground, and so you aren't as 'crowded' with folks sneezing, coughing and breathing all those germs. I'm sure that during the time you are back in Canada you are forever washing your hands, sanitizing things at CJ's and so there is a lot less spreading of germs.
Glad you folks are on the mend and I hope it will be the last illness for you guys this winter.

  3. I hope Harold and Sue had great birthday's, it sure looks like a fun night out. Hope you soon feel like par-tay-ing again. I know you weren't trying to discourage anyone from heading to Mexico in the future so it is important to note that you haven't been sick every time you go. You can't always prepare against diseases and germs but I'm sure you have been careful. Sometimes the germs just find us in ways we can't fathom.

    1. Oh I don't think these illnesses, other than the first Montezuma, are the fault of Mexico at all. We could have been unfortunate and got sick anywhere. In fact we believe they were probably brought from someone flying in to visit and thats how the germs found us. I still blame Doug and Deb!!! LOL
