Rare money

We are so fortunate that almost everywhere we go we meet such nice and unique people.  We met Angela and Chuck through a boondocking page on facebook when Angie asked if anyone knew what Magnolia Beach was like.  I responded that it was a great place to be and they came here.  We didn't have much to do with them for the first couple weeks except the odd chat and wave when I was out walking.  Well in the last week or so we have got to know them and I think there is a friendship spawning.  I think we should try not to scare them off. Ha Ha.  Their travels will likely be such that our paths will cross again this winter we hope.  Like I said in yesterdays post, they came to the football game with us and today they came over for a bonfire with us.

Chuck spent time in the Marines stationed in Hawaii and travelled all over the world.  In his travels he collected beer labels, cigarette packages, and money from various countries.  He obtained more after his stint in the marines and has quite a collection.  He said I could share some with everyone so here are the coins etc that interested me.

Beer labels and Cigarette packages
He got some CCCP coins somehow.  Some of you will remember the CCCP as it was known in Russia, or the USSR as we knew it then.  In 1991 it became Russia.  Apparently at the time before it became Russia, it was illegal to take the money out of the country.  Oh well that was then.  Here are three coins he has in his collection.

In 1841, China ceded the island to the British, and in 1842 the Treaty of Nanking was assigned, formally ending the First Opium War.   On July 1, 1997, Hong Kong was peaceably handed over to China in a ceremony attended by numerous Chinese and British dignitaries.  Before that the currency showed the Queen of England on one side.

An interesting coin was a Nazi coin that he actually found in his garden.  You can see the swastika on one side.

And then there was a Japanese or Chinese coin with a square hole in the middle.

The paper money from Ceylon were very colourful and had some very intricate designs. Ceylon is now known as Sri Lanka.  Ceylon gained independence from Britain in 1948 and changed its name to Sri Lanka when it became a republic in 1972.

After we finished looking at his treasures, we went out and had a bonfire.  I had a hot dog and withing half an hour I was sick as a dog again.  I guess I am not over the flu or whatever it was yet.  So I headed to bed without a picture of the bonfire.

Here is the view out our window today.
