Lets Go Grocery Shopping!

WHERE ARE WE? La Penita, Mexico

First things first every morning is a walk on the beach with Archie.  Today when we got close to downtown, we could see the frigates circling above the beach.  That meant that the fishermen were throwing some fish guts away.  Now you might think this practice is bad, but these birds and the pelicans pick up every single scrap of fish in a heartbeat.  We walked on that section of beach moments later and there wasn't a scrap anywhere.   Maybe we should do this at home for our fish cleaning stations.  The seagulls would love it.

By the time I got home Susan had decided that we should go downtown for a grocery shop.  So, we took the Jeep and headed downtown.  First line of business was to stop at El Cafecito to see what Kenia had to offer.  Although she doesn't have it on the menu, she decided to make us a clubhouse Mexican style.  Wow!!  It was delicious.

Kenia takes a lot of pride in what she does and works hard.  She opens at 7 and closes about 10 every day except Tuesday.  Thats a 90-hour work week!!  She has a great sense of humor and always does something silly for a laugh.

Then it was off to Don Pedro's Bodega.  Mexicans eat a lot of vegetables and fruits, and they pile them high inside and outside the store.  The fruit flies are plentiful, and the floor has lots of squished tomatoes and limons.  When a tomato falls on the floor or sidewalk, they just pick it up and put it back on the rack.  But all in all, the colour and smell of all the fresh produce makes you want to take it all home!!!  They have added some coolers lately so they can bring in some produce from probably California!!  Cherries and grapes and romaine lettuce wrapped in plastic.  It's all the gringo food and you don't see many Mexicans getting stuff out of the cooler!!!  I guess there are local things in the cooler as well, so it is not all foreign food.

And for anyone who wants a little heat there are lots of dried chili peppers.  They have tubs and tubs of them.  I imagine everyone here makes their own hot sauces and salsa's.

We get our bollo buns fresh every day from this cabinet near the front.  The doors don't shut right, and the wooden box needs to be painted but oh my they are sure good.  I buy 3 every day and we just slice them like bread.  Yum yum!!!

So that was our shopping trip and it took up a good portion of our day.  We just did the lazy thing for the rest of the evening.  Hope you had a good one too.  Goodnight!

  1. Nice to feed the gulls. Do they pester you when you are on the beach with any food like our seagulls back home?
That Kenia is a sweet thing, isn't she?

    1. Those are frigates and Pelicans. They are bigger than Canada Geese. No they don't bother anyone unless you have a fish.
