Exploring Guadalajara Centro

WHERE ARE WE? Numero Uno RV Park, La Penita, Mexico

Today we are heading to Guadalajara Centro to the market there.  Guadalajara is the 2nd largest city in Mexico and if you include all the pueblos that make up Guadalajara, it is spread out over many kilometers.  There is lots of traffic and so we opted to take a taxi.  No use risking a fender bender if we don't have to.  Taxi to Centro was 225 pesos for 4 of us so that wasn't bad.  Probably a 45 minute ride.  We followed the overhead train tracks for most of the way.

Off we go in a taxi

Lots of smoke from a fire in the hills.

Entering Guadalajara proper

We got dropped off right in front of the big market and up the stairs we went.  There were 3 floors of everything you could think of in there.  The isles were very narrow but because it was Tuesday, there were not that many people.

The market

My knees didn't like these!!

They had a huge food area so we stopped for lunch.  The girls had the tortas ahogadas (drowned sandwiches) which are famous for the area.  They are soaked in juice of something, and are supposed to be really sloppy.  The ones they got were not sloppy at all but rather tough to chew.  Their experience was not really that great for the first experience.

There was a museum right beside the big market that we went to check out.  Apparently back in the day it was an old folks home.  It was great to see but there were no real exhibits.  Just a big big building with a pretty chapel at the entrance.  And entrance was free today.

We finished our tour by walking down to the Guadalajara Cathedral.  This Cathedral has been rebuilt many times after earthquakes have damaged it.  It is beautiful inside.

I went up to the front of the church and off to one side was a stairway that lead down under the platform.  Of course I had to have a look.  It was a cript and there were a couple of caskets down there of priests from years ago along with a neat little area behind a gate.  Kinda eerie in a way, but very reverend and peaceful in another way.

So when it was time to head home I suggested that we take advantage of the train we saw overhead.  I looked for the overhead tracks but there were none.  That's when we realized that the train went underground right here so down we went.  9.5 pesos to get back to Tlaquepaque Centro and then 125 for a taxi the rest of the way home.  The train probably cut a half hour off the trip.  All in all a fun day.

When we got back to the hotel we had a little rest and then headed down to Tonala Centro for supper.  We found a lovely little restaurant that had something for everyone.

The girls talk to one another.

Ken got a nice pizza and we didn't think he would finish it.  Wrong!

Just about!!

He ate the whole thing.  I look like I wanted some but didn't get any.

I went and stuck my nose in the church in the square to see its beautiful architecture.

There was some sort of a celebration happening at the church before we left.  There was a band and they were carrying some sort of a saint in a parade.  It went to the doors of the church and they did some things and the band played and it was over.  Neat to see though.

We had a fun day with our friends again today.  Our friends John and Lauren, Lou and Andy were here as well but they kinda went their way and we went ours.  We met at breakfast each day, but that was all we ever saw of them.  The idea was that to tour with 8 people would be really slow anyway so we each went our own ways.  A photo op and off to bed.  Good Nite!!
