Harold Warp Pioneer Museum

WHERE ARE WE? Middle of Nowhere, Nebraska

Last night Archie sensed something in the motorhome so I set a trap.  At about 9 pm there was a snap and I grinned!!  Then we heard the trap rattling around under the slide and then nothing.  I went and checked and whatever it was escaped unharmed!!!  Not to be outdone, I reset the trap and headed to bed.  This morning I was triumphant!!  I will reset the trap again, in case he has a friend.

Today we are just meandering north.  I had read on Facebook about a neat museum in Minden Nebraska and it is only about 20 miles off the path we would normally take.  So we hung a left and headed there.  We arrived at the Harold Warp Pioneer Village at about 2:30.  Should be lots of time to just saunter around and see what they have.  Nope!!!  They have 28 huge buildings full of everything you could imagine.  The lady said if a person hustles they can do a scan of the museum in 3 hours but to see it all would take days.  Also she said that they close at 4.  So I tightened my sandal straps and off I went.  Sue stayed behind to have a wee nap.

The entire museum was built and funded by the local Warp family, but they have since died and the survivors want nothing to do with it.  So it is a public entity ran by volunteers, old volunteers I might add and funding to run it is running out.   I asked if they have ever come up with a value based on current dollars and the lady said Billions, like up to 10 Billion!!  A town has a 10 Billion dollar asset and they don't hire someone to promote it??  Crazy.  Given another 20 years and there will be no one interested in viewing the stuff, nor anyone to work there, and most of it will turn into scrap.  Sad but probably true.  If your ever near Grand Island Nebraska it is about 20 minutes south west in Minden.
Check out Harold Warp Pioneer Village. or google pioneervillage.com

Back when the store came to you.  Kinda like prehistoric Amazon.

Cars to no end

And airplanes and streetcars

The old general store

I remember them wrapping produce and meat in this brown paper when you bought it

My first school was kinda like this.  Our teacher, Mrs. Williamson sat at the front and the strap was in the top right hand drawer.

A nice little period church

Ouch, I hated this place.  I remember the glass spitoon.  My dentists name was Dr. Hurton!! Yes it was!!  He would come into the room and give me the freezing needle and then he would go out in his garden which was right outside the window in front of the chair.  He would weed for a while and then come in a wash his hands and get to work.  Terrible memories I know.

This would scare your hair curly!

Who remembers the board on the barber chair??

I wasn't into computers back then but I do remember them.

My uncle had a Twin Cities which in hindsight, I should have kept when he died.

My first real tractor as a kid.  Probably 10 when I would harrow with it.  Putt Putt Putt!

And I learned to operate a combine on one of these.

You had to stand most of the time because the seat was too hard and the angle of the steering wheel was not meant to turn while sitting.  Long days standing up running it.

And the Pinto.  Yup we had one but it never blew up!!

Antique snowmobiles

I had this very Alouette snowmobile when I was young

And my old 350 Yamaha.  Mine was purple.
It is kinda a wake up when you go to a museum and you can relate to over half of the stuff in there.  I visited 27 of the 28 buildings in an hour and a half.  I was pooped!!!

Then we headed up the road again. The farmers are busy in the fields planting corn.  Lots of spraying going on as well.

We are getting closer to home with every km we go.  Sue found a neat little spot to spend the night.

Picnic table could use some help

An old pump

Pretty little outhouse

I think the janitor quit!!!

Here was our travels today.  Temp was 24C this afternoon and will be 7C tonight.

Sue took some pictures of the old pump that is by the motorhome.  We used to have one just like it on the farm.  I can still remember the taste of the water.

Good Nite!!!

  1. Hey, we went there on our honeymoon in 79'. Can you believe all that stuff? When heading west on I80 there are signs for miles for Minden and the museum. Not much else out there. Thanks for the memory and the photos.

  2. You brought back lots of memories in my younger years. My grandparents were ahead of their times, with a pump inside the barn and another mounted on the Kitchen Countertop. Our corner store sold meat wrapped in the Brown Paper as well.
Stay Safe and Enjoy the adventures.

    It's about time.
