A Mexican Circus

WHERE ARE WE? La Penita, Mexico

Dani is having quite a time with all the street dogs here in Mexico.  She loves animals and wants only the best for them, but is struggling with the fact that there are dogs that just live on the street.  It is very different than in Canada, and I guess one of the reasons we don't see it as much, is because of the harsh weather at home.  Dogs can actually exist here without any owner because the weather allows them to just find a place with cover and call it home for the night.  Then they spend the rest of their time forging for scraps from humans or from the garbage which is generally piled by the side of the streets.  Don't get me wrong, there are also some dogs that are in bad shape suffering from all sorts of diseases and they certainly tug at all our heart strings.  We can not save them all, so we have to be prepared to walk on by some of them.  Dani stops and gives every one of them all the love that they will accept. Every dog in town will know here before we leave.  I'm sure all of the dogs in town will be lined up on the street waving goodbye to Dani when we leave!!!

Speaking of animals, tonight we went to the circus which moved into town a couple weeks ago.  It is quite large in size, but there is not much going on inside.  We paid our 50 pesos and tried to go sit in the bleachers.  My gosh, the bleachers were made from 1 X 6 boards with about 16 ft of span, so when you stepped in the middle the board flexed about 6 inches.  I climbed up a piece on my hands and knees before telling the kids we had to find something safer.

Down we went and found a chair in the front row.  Now many people attended tonight.

They are not allowed to have animal acts any more in Mexico so it was more people doing little skits and making the kids laugh.  There were some trapeze guys there which was good.  They also did a little jump over 4 horses thing that the kids loved.  I guess they do have 4 horses in the ring but they just stand there.

They had one of those big metal balls that a couple motorcycles can operate in.  It is noisy and probably not as dangerous as it seems.  Anyway, it was probably the most exciting part of the show.

At the very end they brought in a very old elephant who has probably been with this circus for years and is now retired.  We thought he would do a couple tricks but all he did was stand there and eat popcorn.  They offered pictures with him so we sprung for the 50 pesos.

It was a pretty good night and we have now been to a Mexican circus.  We got a picture of this awesome tree on the way home.  Good Nite!!!

  1. You haven't seen anything until you've been to a Mexican rodeo!
