A Tour of Downtown Mazatlán

WHERE ARE WE? Baraka's Beach Club, Mazatlán, Mexico

The main reason we are spending an extra day in Mazatlán is because we want to spend some time with our friend Dave Oakey.  Dave is our mainstay musician back a Cj's in the summer and he spends his winters in Mazatlán playing music at a couple venues.  If you are ever in Mazatlán, music is one of the things that makes the world go round here.  However we will not hear Dave performing because he only plays on Saturday and Sundays so he offered to take us on a tour of El Centro today.  Sue was not feeling too good today so I decided to go alone.  Around noon I caught a Green bus to the downtown area to meet Dave at Edgars bar.

12 pesos got me the 25 minute ride downtown and dropped me right outside to door to Edgars Bar.

A quick cervesa and we were off on a tour of the old downtown of Mazatlan.  There is a lot of history here and you can feel it.  Many big stars used to visit Mazatlan as their holiday getaway.  I won't go into the details of the significance of the buildings but Dave did say that this area is protected as a heritage site.

This is the avenue used on a lot of postcards and advertising.

We stopped and had a bit of lunch at La Fonda de Chalio.  Dave said that the owner worked here as a waiter for 40 years before he saved enough money to buy the place.  He does a good job of running this place now apparently.  The burritos were great!!

We continued on down the Malicon for a bit.

And past the Basilica which was closed today for some reason.  I bet it was beautiful on the inside.

And a walk through the big indoor market.  Neither of us were shoppers so it was just a brisk walk through it.  It was huge and covered at least a city block or maybe more.

We decided to take a break at a little hotel for a drink and a chat.  Its always nice to just chat about things back home.

The square nearby was the Municipal offices and they had lots of Christmas stuff set up.  I bet it is awesome at night.

We said our goodbyes and will meet again sometime in May back in Rivers.  Thanks for the tour Dave.  I managed to get home in time for another sunset so it is the picture out our window tonight.  Good Nite!

  2. Nice tour. How pretty with all the colors those buildings are. I am guessing you are right about the Basilica, that it is beautiful inside. Hope Sue is feeling better.

  3. Looks like you enjoyed Mazatlan. It would probably be lovely at night down that street.
