Another Traditional Celebration

WHERE ARE WE? La Penita, Mexico

Remember I told you about the local fundraiser we had for our local restaurant owner and friend, Sergio?  Well he made this sign and posted it at his restaurant.  What a nice family.  We are so happy that we made a little difference in their lives.  He promised me a ride on the new bike one day.  I'm not sure I'm ready for a motorcycle ride with a Mexican!!! lol

Today we were honoured to be invited to attend the confirmation of Kenia's cousin Diago.  Her other cousin Karen will be confirmed as well.  Karen is the young lady whose quinceanara (15th birthday celebration) we attended a few weeks back.  Apparently, after the kids turn 15, they are deemed adults and are confirmed into the church and this is the ceremony to do that.  The whole celebration was scheduled to start at 6:00 Mexican time!!  So about 6:30 the ceremony got under way lol.  We got to go up on the balcony because the bottom was full of the young people with their parents and god parents.  The confirmers all wore white and there was a special bishop there to do the officiating.  It was a long service especially without being able to understand what was being said, and not being Catholic.  We did however understand the ceremony, so it all made some sense to us.  Near the end of the service they all stood up and awaited the blessing of the church.

When the bishop came along he did the anointing of oil.

When that was over they did the communion service.

It was neat to watch it all from the balconey with a birds eye view.  Abuela and Great Abuela and Oscar joined us up there too.  Great Abuela is someone we love to see.  Anyone would be proud to have her for a grandma.  Oscar certainly loves her.

Of course, as with all Mexican events, there is a party afterwards.  The party was at Tina's with lots of food, drink, and candy treats.  There is so much laughter in this house that it warms your heart.  They will give until they have nothing left!!!  So blessed to have met them.  The girls were into the tequila in a big way!!!  They use lots of fresh fruit in their drinks.

We had the pleasure of meeting Kenia's Tita, Tina's oldest daughter Patti and her husband Alonso.  They are wonderful people and they know quite a bit of English.  We have never met Patti before so we had a little time to get to know them.  I never really got a picture except this one.

And of course I laid my phone down and Kenia got it.  This is Kenia's sister Itsuri.  Can you tell?  They are a lot alike.  Itsuri is Katherines mama!!!

I got a little snuggle time with Katherine.  She is so cute!!!  Of course she likes to take selfies.  She always tells Kenia that we speak very badly!!!  blah blah blah she says.

Lots of people, lots of food, lots of laughter made for a fun night.  Even the little ones got in on the dancing.  My goodness they sure know how to dance here in Mexico!!  It tires me out to watch them.  Good Nite!!!

  1. I think you are the best of the best of the winter visitors to Mexico. Or any visitors.

  3. Beautiful ceremony for a beautiful young lady! The Mexican people know how to celebrate all occasions. Great pictures of the event, Lorne.
