More Touring

WHERE ARE WE? Moolack Parking area, Newport, Oregon

We are going to explore around here for the day and just do our thing.  There is a lighthouse just down the road in a Federal Park so we headed over there.  The Yanquina Head Lighthouse is 150 years old and has been a major lighthouse along the coast of Oregon.  They did have tours but it was a 45 minute wait in line so we passed.  The tour did not include going upstairs anyway.

On the way out of the park we saw one lonely seal swimming in the bay below us.  Can you see him?

After the lighthouse we headed into Newport to check out the fishing boats and the old town by the bay.  There are lots of big bridges along the coast here and Newport had a couple of nice ones.

There were lots of ships at the docks I guess because it is Saturday and also they are just between fishing seasons.

As we walked out on the dock there was lots of grunting going on further down the dock.  We looked around the corner of one boat and there were a bunch of sea lions hanging around waiting for a feed of fish.  Everyone said they can be aggressive, so we stayed back from them but they were not the least bit interested in us.

There was one little guy swimming around but he didn't seem to be accepted by the big guys.

After some time on the docks and checking the shops we headed back over the way to check on another little lighthouse.  One the way we passed by this silly looking phone booth?  I have no idea what it was all about!!

Then we headed back north for a few miles to check out a place called the Devils Punchbowl.  It is a neat hole in the rocks where the tide comes in and out.  Apparently when the tide levels are high, it is quite spectacular as the pressure of the waves fills the hole and shoots up the wall.  Right now the tide levels are low and although it was high tide, the water didn't come close to filling the hole.  For perspective we are looking down at least 100 feet on the bowl which is probably 200 feet across.  It is not small like the picture portrays.  And the waves were sending up great plumes of water when they hit the rocks below.

By this time hunger had set in so we went back to the little town of Depoe Bay.  Our friend Phyllis said that it was one of her favorite towns along the way.  We picked a restaurant called The Sea Hag to dine in.

The food was good but not over the top. It was a cool day by now so I had a hot chocolate and it was delicious.  I had fish and chips and Sue had coconut shrimp.  She said they were not even close to Sergio's in La Penita!!!!

We made it back to our parking spot before sunset.  We took Archie for a little walk on the beach again and took another picture of us up there on the cliff!!

We didn't actually see it set because of the clouds, but it did come out for a minute before hiding back in behind them again.  Good Nite!

  4. Dr Who must have dropped in for a visit. Time And Relative Dimension In Space. TARDIS.
I own a TARDIS candy box that makes the time shift noise. My husband also built a replica. Thanks for the photo and memories. Have a good journey - sure could get there in an instant in the TARDIS. Well the MH wouldn't fit in the door, but plenty of space inside for it. :o)

  5. You are giving me wonderful memories of my childhood..I grew up about an hour from there in a small town called Dallas, by Salem. I spent many summer days exactly where you are now...Marine Science Center in Newport, whale watching and watching taffy being pulled on Main drag thro Depot Bay, flying kits on the beach..our hair smelling of clean air and salt from being wind blown. Fish and Chips or seafood chowder at Mo's (a local intitution at various locations along the coast) is a must! And do me a favor before you leave the area. Go to some outcropping of rocks by the water, find a tide pool, and stick your finger in the middle of a sea anenomy. Thrills of children growing up at the beach. And look for sand dollars!
